Installing DirectX 9.0c for older games

Installing DirectX 9.0c on a Windows 11 computer to run older games like Blur is possible, though DirectX 11 and later versions are already integrated into Windows 10 and 11.

However, older games might require specific DirectX 9 components that aren’t present in the newer versions. Here’s how you can install DirectX 9.0c:

Download the Installer

Visit the Microsoft Download Center to download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.

Run the Installer

Find the downloaded file, should be named dxwebsetup.exe in your Downloads folder and double-click it to run the installer.

Follow the Prompts

Follow the on-screen instructions. The installer will assess your system and download any DirectX 9 files that are missing. Make sure you’re connected to the internet for this process.

Complete Installation

Once the installation is complete, restart your computer to ensure all components are properly configured.

Launch Your Game

After restarting, try launching your game (e.g. Blur) again. The game should now recognise the necessary DirectX 9 components.

Additional Context

Installing DirectX 9.0c will not overwrite your existing DirectX installation.
Windows maintains different versions as needed for compatibility with various applications.

Would love to archive an offline installer. I’ll be adding that to my todo list!

It may also be worth including some information on enabling DirectPlay for older games. I’ll write something up and post it too.

It’s also in LANCommander in both the blur and redistributable packages too
